During the heist a group of Orb commandos responded to the crisis by stealing the battleship Archangel along with the Earth Alliance’s Strike Gundam. During the chaos they secured and activated three Astray Gundams of their own creation and repelled the ZAFT forces at the cost of Heliopolis being destroyed. 

Green Frame was fully constructed after the Archangel went to earth. It, along with the Purple Frame, were hastily completed in order to be serviceable for the Orb Military. Green Frame would be assigned to Keiran Larris and be assigned to the Archangel along with the other Astray prototypes.

Blue frame was preserved by Geneva Halston during the Heliopolis disaster. She went on to defend the Archangel and defeat two heavy weapons GINNs with her untested unit. Just prior to being deployed again for training exercises on earth,  Blue Frame was outfitted new experimental weapons.

Red frame was originally tasked to be commandeered by the Orb Special Forces agent Ed Shiro but was tricked by the test pilot Roane MacMaster. Roane blended in during the chaos and helped transfer the parts for Green and Purple frames while the battle for Heliopolis was fought. Red frame is unique in that it has the first prototype version of a natural operating system installed, with Roane being uniquely qualified to operate the machine.

The Gundam Astray Purple Frame was commandeered by Lieutenant Nathaniel Barondel. He used the unit to fight off a GINN, and eventually confronted the ZAFT flagship to negotiate a cease fire. The Gundam Astray Purple Frame was still in pieces during the Heliopolis incident. It was later fully constructed onboard the Archangel and has been developed the the second generation of Natural Operating System installed. Because the Purple frame was developed later than the other units in its’ line it had several design features that were outline but never implemented in its’ blueprints. The unit was hastily constructed to be serviceable along side the other Astray Gundams.

The AEUG commissioned Anaheim Electronics to develop a mass production unit for their mobile forces. The group had been converting GM units into GM II before acquiring newly-built GM II units from the Earth Federation. However, the AEUG leadership recognised that the group needed its own supply of mass-produced mobile suits to ensure its prowess in the battlefield. The Nemo uses many weapons already employed by other existing mobile suits to keep development costs down.

The Nemo was a successful model and featured heavily in the front lines during the Gryps Conflict. However, this led to the decimation of most Nemo units. With the production struggling to catch up with demand, the Nemo units were assigned to more experienced and proven pilots.
